05 thing to know about National Mathematics Day 2017 : Birthday of Ramanujan

The day ' 22 December" has been decleared as the National Mathematics Day in India. The Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 and died on 26 April 1920. In 2012 Dr Manmohan Singh announced the year as National Mathematics Year.

National Mathematics Day is celebrated with numerous educational events held at Indian schools and universities. So today in this post we have posted some facts about National Mathematics Day and Ramanujan.


  • Because paper was expensive, poor Ramanujan often used to derive his results on a 'slate' to jot down results of his derivations.
  • His house in Kumbakonam, where the family had moved after his birth, is now maintained as the Srinivasa Ramanujan International Monument.
  • He compiled 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations), before he lost his life at the age of 32. His infinite series for pi was one of his most celebrated findings.
  • G.H. Hardy brought Ramanujan with him to England but unfortunately the English weather didn't suit him. He also reported of mild racism towards him.
  • He was the second Indian to be inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a Fellowship of some of the world’s most eminent scientists.
